I can’t remember when it first occurred to me that shooting a gun might be fun. Growing up in the Bronx, I was a city girl who saw myself as the main character in the “Harriet, The Spy” book. Guns were something that Elmer Fudd carried around to try to “catch” the silly wabbit. Oh, and there was that one episode with the gangsters. “Shut up shuttin’ up”.
We eventually moved out of the city, first to the burbs and then to the ruburbs. Somewhere along the way I met people who enjoyed shooting as a hobby, and not just shooting at varmints. It sure sounded like fun, but there was work, then marriage, then kids and all that goes along with those things. Who knew where to even GO to shoot, let alone get a gun. So it stayed a back burner item. Something for the bucket list.
About 3-4 years ago, with the kids in their teens and my husband happily ensconced in his new hobby (dirt track racing) I decided what I wanted for Christmas was a gun. My husband agreed, so off to a nearby gun shop we went. Luckily for me, the gentleman that helped us said “Wait, don’t just buy a gun when you haven’t even ever shot one!” I will always be grateful to him, because he handed me the card of who would turn out to be a most excellent shooting instructor and fitter. I really believe this has made shooting what it is for me today.
I know it’s only been about 4 years, a short time compared to many of my peers, but I have to say, without a doubt, that shooting is one of the most enjoyable activities I have engaged in ever. Sporting clays is where I started, though I do now have a rifle and a handgun (with the prerequisite permit). But my 20 gauge Browning Citori 525 is my favorite and probably always will be
My shooting partner and I have a blast (no pun intended) when we’re on the course, whether we are hitting them or not. Of course, we really prefer to be hitting them. When we tell other women what we do, we always tell them to just give it a try, and that it may be one of the most empowering things they can give themselves, along with one of the most fun.
